Mixed Media Printmaking
ABOUT JOHANNA PAAS
JOHANNA PAAS
I'm a maker.
I received my BFA from the University of Michigan and my MFA from Louisiana State University. I am a professor at Central Michigan University, where I teach all levels of printmaking and contribute to a vibrant studio art program. I was honored to receive the Central Michigan University Teaching Excellence Award in both 2009 and 2025. I take great pleasure in sharing my passion for art and learning from my students' unique perspectives and insights.
I have participated in artist residencies at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts and Can Serrat in Spain. Additionally, I have taught workshops and taken part in visiting artist events across the nation.
My creative practice focuses on mixed-media printmaking. I combine traditional printmaking methods, such as intaglio, silkscreen, relief, and lithography, with drawing, painting, and collage. I enjoy exploring new materials and playfully combining methods. I am actively expanding my individual creative endeavors, while also working on collaborative projects with fellow artist Mariah Doren. Our collaborative images incorporate photography and printmaking. Our work explores the intersections of nature, mapping, mathematics, and structure.
I have participated in various national and international exhibitions. My work has been included in several collections, including the University of Northern Arizona Art Museum, the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, South Africa, and the University Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana.
My love for art and teaching is fueled the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and serve my community. This commitment lies at the heart of everything I do.
